Public Records Act Litigation
Civil Litigation
For more than 20 years, our firm has handled cases under Wisconsin’s Open Records and Open Meetings Law. Although many of the cases under this law are brought by media firms such as newspapers, TV or radio stations, and other news providers, the general public also has a right to the public records of any state or local governmental entity. The basis for these actions is recognized in Wisconsin Statute secs. 19.31 through 19.37.
We have successfully represented numerous entities and individuals in actions to obtain access to public records held by government agencies. We also assist in drafting records requests and may be able to obtain the records without filing suit. The law provides that a prevailing party who obtains access to records is entitled to the recovery of costs and attorney fees under the Wisconsin Open Records Law. This is an important consideration we use to our client’s benefit.
